This study examines the effects of restrictive measures implemented during the Ebola outbreak on the activities of women engaged in informal cross-border trade between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda within the African Great Lakes region. A survey was conducted among 338 women cross-border traders in Goma and Bukavu. The findings reveal that 59.8% of the respondents managed to continue their business activities under difficult conditions, while 66% experienced a significant decline in their monthly profits, as confirmed by a Chi-square test (p < 0.001). Border closures also disrupted supply chains, increased purchase prices, and raised transaction costs. To sustain their businesses, 66.3% of the women adopted a collective procurement (group purchasing) system, thereby confirming the hypothesis that collective action constitutes an effective resilience strategy. Despite this adaptive response, the traders faced delivery delays, reduced control over their goods, and limited institutional support. The study concludes that regional mechanisms capable of balancing public health protection with the continuity of cross-border trade are essential to strengthening the economic resilience of women traders in the African Great Lakes region.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain an important public health problem among school-aged children, particularly in communities with inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene and limited access to safe water. This study determined the occurrence and intensity of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm infections among primary school children in Gabasawa Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 255 apparently healthy primary school children aged 5–12 years. Stool samples were collected and examined macroscopically and microscopically using direct wet mount and formalin-ether concentration techniques. Parasites were identified based on their characteristic morphological features, while infection intensity was determined using the Kato-Katz technique. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Of the 255 children examined, 65 (25.5%) were infected with at least one intestinal helminth, while 190 (74.5%) were negative. A. lumbricoides was the most prevalent parasite, occurring in 35 (13.7%) children, followed by hookworm with 21 (8.3%) and T. trichiura with 9 (3.5%). Infection was significantly associated with age (p = 0.027), with children aged 8–10 years recording the highest number of infections. Although males had a higher occurrence (14.5%) than females (11.0%), the association between sex and infection was not statistically significant (p = 0.264). Light infections predominated for all three parasites, while heavy infections occurred only with A. lumbricoides. The study demonstrates that STH infections remain prevalent among school children in Gabasawa LGA, highlighting the need for regular deworming, improved sanitation, safe water, personal hygiene and continuous health education.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria is a major global public health challenge that threatens the effective treatment of infectious diseases and increases morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs and treatment failure. This review examines the major mechanisms by which bacteria develop and disseminate resistance to antimicrobial agents, with emphasis on their molecular and physiological basis. Bacterial resistance may be intrinsic or acquired through spontaneous genetic mutations and horizontal gene transfer involving transformation, transduction and conjugation. The principal mechanisms discussed include enzymatic inactivation of antimicrobial agents, modification and protection of antimicrobial targets, reduced membrane permeability, active efflux, metabolic pathway modification, biofilm-associated resistance, persistence and antimicrobial tolerance. Particular attention is given to β-lactamases, including extended-spectrum β-lactamases and carbapenemases, as well as aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, altered penicillin-binding proteins, ribosomal modification, fluoroquinolone target mutations and transferable colistin resistance. The review also highlights resistance mechanisms associated with major antibiotic classes, including β-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, polymyxins and rifampicin. The emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms results from the accumulation and interaction of multiple resistance mechanisms, thereby severely limiting therapeutic options.

The study investigated communication as predictors of marital harmony among teachers in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study comprised all the married public senior secondary school teachers in Rivers State, totaling 6,174 with a sample size of 366 secondary school teachers drawn using Fluid survey online calculator. Multi-stage procedure was used for the study. two self-constructed instruments titled: “Communication Scale (CS) and Marital Harmony Scale (MHS) were used to collect data. The instruments CS and MHS were validated by the two experts in Guidance and Counselling, in the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling. The reliability of the instruments was determined using Cronbach alpha reliability method that yielded the following reliability indices: CS = .85 and MHS = .87 respectively. However, the reliability coefficients of the subscales were also obtained. Simple regression analysis was used to answer the research questions and test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance using SPSS version 25. The result of the study showed that: couples spending quality time together and verbal communication positively and significantly predicted the marital harmony of teachers in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that poor communication skills and who does not spend quality time together should be encouraged to go for marriage counselling amongst others.

Arid and semi-arid areas (ASALs) are highly vulnerable to drought, water and forage scarcity, land degradation, and socioeconomic shocks, threatening livestock assets and pastoral livelihoods. This review synthesizes literature published between 2020 and 2026 on livestock production, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods, with a focus on Kenya and the wider Horn of Africa. It examines feed and fodder systems, climate-resilient breeding, animal health, rangeland management, pastoral mobility, livestock marketing and value addition, climate information, insurance, livelihood diversification, and inclusive institutions. The evidence confirms that livestock remain central to food security, income, savings, employment, and household resilience, but recurrent droughts can erode herds and prolong recovery. Building resilience therefore requires integrated interventions that strengthen feed and animal health, promote locally adapted breeds and climate-resilient husbandry, restore rangelands, and support sustainable grazing and mobility. Improved markets, value addition, financial and climate-risk services, and livelihood diversification can further increase returns and reduce vulnerability, while gender-responsive approaches, local knowledge, social networks, and inclusive governance support adoption and sustainability. Overall, the literature suggests that isolated interventions are unlikely to deliver durable resilience. Sustainable pastoral development requires context-specific packages that increase productivity and value per animal while protecting rangelands and strengthening adaptive capacity. Future policy, investment, and research should therefore integrate feed security, breeding, animal health, rangeland governance, mobility, market development, climate-risk financing, livelihood diversification, and social inclusion to strengthen pastoral livelihoods and sustain dryland ecosystems.

The increasing adoption of digital technologies has transformed public administration by enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability. In Nigeria, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) was introduced to improve payroll administration, eliminate ghost workers, and strengthen public financial management. Despite these achievements, the growing dependence on digital platforms has exposed government information systems to cybersecurity threats capable of undermining accountability and public trust. This study examined the cybersecurity challenges confronting the IPPIS and their implications for public sector accountability. Specifically, the study investigated the effects of cybersecurity threats, cybersecurity control measures, and cybersecurity policy compliance on public sector accountability. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted, and primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to employees of selected Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) operating under the IPPIS framework. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 27. The findings revealed that cybersecurity control measures significantly enhance public sector accountability (β = 0.470, p < .05), while cybersecurity policy compliance exerts the strongest positive influence (β = 0.586, p < .05). Conversely, cybersecurity threats had a negative but statistically insignificant effect (β = –0.068, p > .05). The study concludes that effective cybersecurity governance is indispensable for sustaining transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria's digital public administration. It recommends continuous investment in cybersecurity infrastructure, strict enforcement of cybersecurity policies, regular staff capacity building, and strengthened institutional governance to improve the resilience of government information systems.
